Republican Women for Progress Calls for Immediate Election Certification & Removal of Trump
Today marked the end of America’s history of being able to have peaceful transitions of power. The violent storming of our nation’s Capitol, the first since the War of 1812, by Trump fanatics is the direct result of his encouragement and refusal to concede his loss in a free, fair, and legitimate election. Today’s insurrection is indeed the culmination of Trump’s four-year campaign to undermine truth, our democratic institutions, and the rule of law.
While Donald Trump is the ringleader of this seditious behavior, he was aided and amplified every step of the way by the feckless Members of Congress who parrot his conspiracy theories and dangerous rhetoric. Responsibility for these acts of domestic terrorism is born equally by Donald Trump and the Republican Members of Congress who are standing in the way of a standard Constitutional process to certify the results of the 2020 election. Republicans in both the House and Senate looking to gain political clout, by spreading misinformation and perpetuating Trump’s false claims of a second electoral win, decided our democracy was less important than their political aspirations. The Republican Party and the American public should not forget their names after the smoke on the steps of the Capitol clears.
We applaud the Republican leaders who stood for certification of this election — even those who recently awakened to the danger of Trump’s rhetoric and the violence it causes. Republican Women For Progress strongly believes in our democratic institutions and the importance of having two functioning political parties, neither of which is on the side of white nationalism.
We believe the pathway back to a healthy Republican party is to renounce the cult of Trumpism and rebuild a party around a return to conservative ideals and common decency. It is harmful to our party, to our country, and to our standing in the world to continue to embolden this divisiveness and this “us vs. them” mentality towards our fellow Americans. To that end, we add our voices to those calling for the immediate removal of Donald Trump from the Office of the President and certification of the legitimate election results.
